Joseph Roy

As a passionate researcher specializing in ecology and environmental biology, my journey spans diverse academic pursuits and hands-on work in conservation and field research. I started my academic journey due to my curiosity in understanding how humans change ecosystems and how the animals adapt to it. In a framework of anthropogenic evolution, I am trying to understand how Anthropocene is shaping the life around us. I am learning and trying to understand how to address the repercussions of urbanization on ecosystems and how to make human habitations more animal inclusive. I am always fascinated by the social behaviour in animals and humans. My mission is to foster environmental awareness and drive collaborative initiatives to promote nature and scientific education for younger generations.

This project follows the efforts of Refauna to revitalize Rio de Janeiro’s Tijuca National Park by reintroducing howler monkeys. Urbanization has fragmented the rainforest, disrupting its biodiversity and ecological balance. Through extensive research and collaboration, Refauna is working to restore the forest’s vibrancy by reintroducing this keystone species. The project explores the historical context of the park’s creation, challenges in the reintroduction process, and the potential for a thriving urban forest ecosystem. It highlights the interconnectedness of species, the impacts of urbanization, and the importance of restoring urban green spaces. Joseph Roy, as a Darwin Leader, participates in this project to learn from the experts at Refauna and gain valuable knowledge to enhance his career and contribute to conservation efforts back home. Joseph’s passion for understanding the effects of urbanization on ecosystems and how animals adapt to these changes drives his work in conservation and ecological research. He aims to promote environmental consciousness and collaborative efforts, particularly for younger generations, to protect and restore urban ecosystems.
